Today I am due south, and finally – after nearly 11 months of being in the country – I’m going to see the South Island of New Zealand!
Thanks to Grabaseat, I managed to hook some bargain flights to Christchurch for the weekend, from Napier, and I plan to stay in a hostel which is a converted prison.
On landing, it was a bit chilly -well certainly compared to Hawke’s Bay where, after last weekend’s storms, it’s been averaging around 18 degrees over the last week.
Getting from the airport to the hostel was pretty straight forward as there are several bus routes into the city centre. I’m staying at the Jailhouse Accommodation – an old prison that has been converted into a hostel.
It’s pretty near the city centre, and is a great hostel – very clean and friendly. It’s definitely not a ‘party hostel’ (nothing worse than staying somewhere where there are 18 year olds running around drunk at 3am – believe me, I’ve been there). There are mix of people staying here – young and older. I’m staying in a 10 bunk room, which is fine, and has an ensuite toilet and sink, although a little chilly given the brickwork and high ceilings.
Although, there was an awkward moment when I realised I was dressed like the mannequin in reception however…
…anyway, tomorrow I explore!
For cheap flights and being in prison and not having been arrested – 4 out of 5 stars
