Headspace in the Auckland Botanical Gardens

“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better” – Albert Einstein

A rainy spring Saturday here in Auckland, so to lift the spirits I took a trip to the Botanical Gardens in Manakau.

The Botanical Gardens are 64 hectares of gardens and native forest , although I couldn’t bring myself to walk ALL the way around after an 11km run that morning (still in training for the half marathon in a couple of weeks).

Walking in nature, and being in green spaces can improve your mental health according to studies, and can reduce anxiety and reduce negative thoughts. Exercise itself also has benefits, and is effective to treat depression, anxiety and stress.

I don’t know if it was the morning exercise, or being out among the beautiful plants and trees of the gardens, but either way something worked, and even the rain couldn’t dampen my mood.

The Botanical Gardens are around a 20 minute drive from the CBD, and are free to enter. Along with native and foreign plants and trees, there is also a visitor’s centre, children’s area, and sculpture garden to enjoy. I’ll be back in the summer with a picnic I think.
